The Villa Maria College 21st Annual High School Juried Photography Exhibition

Villa Maria College’s Photography Program is hosting the 21st Annual High School Juried Photography Exhibition this spring. The exhibition will run from May 22 through June 13 with an opening reception on Friday, May 22 from 5-7 p.m. The opening reception will offer opportunities for students and teachers in the Western New York area to meet and socialize with the Art Department faculty, including instructors in Photography, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Animation, Fashion Design and Fine Art.

This year’s awards include first, second and third place, 10 honorable mentions, and two $2000 scholarship awards. Scholarships will be awarded to students who apply in either the two-year Associate in Applied Science or the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography.Work from all grade levels will also be accepted.

Last year’s call for entries resulted in a magnificent response, and the exhibition was well received. Over $4400 in prizes were awarded, and the opening reception provided a great forum for both students and teachers.

“The enthusiasm expressed by teachers and the high quality of photographs produced by students has ensured a commitment to the success and strength of this exhibition,” wrote Laura Snyder, professor of photography at Villa.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 15, with an early deadline of May 8 to be considered for press releases. The entry fee is $1 per photograph. Please label each submission (matted or framed) using the attached labels (copy as many as needed).

Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the House of Representatives. The over-all winner of our district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will also include artwork from other contest winners nation-wide.

Public Gallery

  • All submissions will be on public display in the first floor lobby at the Larkin at Exchange Building at 726 Exchange Street in Buffalo from April 20th through May 3rd. On May 3rd, Congressman Higgins will host a ceremony and reception for teachers, students and their families where the top winners will be announced. Students can take their artwork home with them after the reception.

Virtual Gallery/Contest

  • From April 20th through April 30th all submissions will be posted in a virtual gallery on Congressman Higgins website with additional viewing opportunities through the Congressman’s Facebook page and Twitter feed. The public will be able to vote for their favorite pieces online.

Competition Winners

  • Local leaders in the Western New York art community will help select the winning piece which will be sent to the Capitol. Additional prizes will be awarded for the piece that best represents Western New York and the top vote earner on the online gallery. An Award Reception for teachers, students and their families will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 2-3pm in the display area on the first floor lobby at Larkin at Exchange, 726 Exchange Street.

Albright-Knox Future Curator’s Exhibit

On Thursday, April 16, 2015, the 2015 AK Teens: Future Curators presented the opening celebration of their exhibition,Coexistence: Humans and Nature, for family, friends, and special guests. After remarks by Albright-Knox Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Dr. Janne Sirén; First Niagara Senior Vice President, Managing Director, Retail Channels Group Scott Fisher; Albright-Knox Curator of Education and Community Engagement Jessica DiPalma, and 2015 Future Curator Clara Garvey, guests enjoyed music by The Nozz Trio, a jazz group from Niagara Falls High School; tours of the exhibition by the 2015 Future Curators; and a reception with music by classical violinist Bailey Valint of Kenmore East High School.

The exhibition is organized by the 2015 Future Curators, a group of Western New York teens, and features works created by teen artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario. Coexistence: Humans and Nature is on view through May 17, 2015, in the Clifton Hall Link. A second opening celebration will take place at the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at 5 pm.
